In 1992, CEAS decided to open a permanent program regarding the promotion and critique on Visual Anthropology and Ethnographic Film. NAV-CEAS promoted and organized several scientific meetings, exhibits and projections, with the support of institutions such as the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, the Institut Franco-Portugais or the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. In 2004, given the growing interest of a diversified audience in this aream CEAS decided to promote a monthly Seminar in Visual Anthropology, in cooperation with the town council’s video library, videoteca Municipal de Lisboa.
Aware of the scientific relevance of this discipline and cinematographic genre, NAV-CEAS is a proud pioneer in its promotion, namely in diversified audiences such as scholar, academic, artistic and general public. NAV-CEAS has also been responsible for the maintenance of a specialized video library on visual anthropology, documentary and also fiction, available for CEAS members (on a loan basis, as well as local viewing). This nucleus also organises periodical sessions of “Tertúlias”, where films are presented and discussed, if possible with the film directors.
NAV-CEAS has organised, over the last years, several events. For example:
- Film cycle “Olhares sobre Portugal. Cinema e Antropologia”, organised with ABC Cine-Clube of Lisbon and taking place in the Instituto Franco-Português and the Museu de Etnologia from May to June 1993.
